COACHES: Max Domi will get the glamour for this goal but I LOVE the start to this play. Watch Jeff Petry as he starts this breakout….particularly his eyes. Head up looking off F1, he freezes him, then turns his head to make the play. Such an underrated little deceptive habit!
And it’s a habit that can be learned in practice…from the youngest of ages. HEAD UP, HEAD UP, HEAD UP!!
The best players are ALWAYS playing with their head up. It allows them to see the ice at a different level…to find their teammates, to read the opposition’s coverages, and also to avoid injury.
So how can we develop this habit, even for the little players?
One game I love to play with the mites is getting them in small areas and playing “sharks and minnows.” Everybody has a puck, they have to skate around the ice, and the coaches try and knock the puck off their stick. They have to look to see where the coaches are, where the traffic of the other players are, and stickhandle at the same time.
Playing with your head up is a HABIT that must continually be harped on by coaches for the kids at all ages!
